Chief Justice McCalla Makes Renewed Call for Full Implementation of Criminal Case Management
The Hon. Mrs. Justice Zaila McCalla (Chief Justice), has reiterated the importance of the full implementation of Criminal Case Management, and emphasized the priority that must be placed on the initiative for the country's courts.
“That is an initiative that will be pressed this year with even greater fervor,” Chief Justice McCalla said. The Chief Justice made her remarks at the swearing-in of five judges by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, at King’s House, on January 6, 2014.
Criminal Case Management is designed as an administrative hearing to resolve any and all issues in a case, as part of the preparatory work before the matter is set down for trial. Chief Justice McCalla spearheads the initiative, and is supported by a Steering Committee, chaired The Hon. Mr. Justice C. Dennis Morrison – Judge of Appeal
The Chief Justice congratulated the judges, and thanked them for their dedication and commitment, and indicated the judiciary’s resolve to press for improvement in this very vital area, by continuing to pursue the full implementation of the system.
Sworn in were: The Hon. Mrs. Justice Carol Lawrence Beswick, to act as Judge of Appeal; The Hon. Mrs. Justice Sharon Ayton George, appointed as Puisne Judge; The Hon. Mrs. Justice Ingrid Mangatal, to act as Judge of Appeal; The Hon. Mrs. Justice Audre Lindo, to act as Puisne Judge and Master Rosemarie Harris to act as Master in Chambers.
The Governor-General noted that the judges’ knowledge and experience will enable them to be effective and efficient in dispensing justice. He also highlighted the important role Judges must play in reassuring all Jamaicans that the process of justice is one which is fear and transparent.
Responding on behalf of the appointees, Justice Beswick said the judges are grateful for the opportunity to serve their country and pledged their continued dedication and tireless effort in dispensing with justice for all citizens.
